PORTLAND -- Members of the board of education learned this week that the town has been ranked among the top 10 elementary school districts in the state.
The information was included in "The State of Connecticut Public Education," a report compiled by ConnCAN, an independent research group. The report, which includes report cards on more than 160 public school districts and 1,000 public schools, provides information on how well the state's public schools are meeting the needs of students.
"It's a real validation of all the work the kids did last year," said Superintendent Sally Doyen, who shared the information during the board's regular meeting Tuesday.
According to the report, Portland ranked third among Connecticut school districts that showed performance gains in the percentage of fourth- and fifth-graders who scored within goal range on the Connecticut Mastery test. Fourth- and fifth-graders at Gildersleeve School have improved by 19.6 percent, the report showed. Andover and Stafford school districts were ranked first and second in this category.
"I think we should issue a letter of congratulations to the schools involved," said board of education member Honora Kenney. |
