Located on the shores of the Ct. River, Portland is a town of approximately 9000 people and is rich in history. Long known for its Brownstone Quarries, where the Brownstone for buildings in New York, Boston and California came from, the quarries are no longer in operation, but are now the home of the new Brownstone Park, where people can come and enjoy all kinds of water activities. Portland was also the home of a very large shipbuilding industry and many large ships were produced by the Gildersleeve's starting in the 1800's. As you travel down the wide tree lined Main St, you will see many historic homes and churches.
The large Brownstone building on the right, which was formerly the Town Hall is now the home of the Police Department and Youth Services. The Town Hall has moved to East Main St. and is located where the former Central School was located. Portland has a very large library, which is behind the Police Dept. The other large Brownstone building on the left, formerly the Junior High School is now the Brownstone Middle School. The other elementary schools are Valley View and Gildersleeve and the Junior High School is new and attached to the High School on High Street.
Because of its location on the river, Portland is home to several marinas and boaters can enjoy traveling up and down the scenic river or traveling to the mouth of the river and out to the Sound. Portland is also lucky to have 3 public golf courses, Portland Golf Course, Quarry Ridge Golf Course and Portland West, which is an executive par 60 course. All of the course are well maintained and each offers its own challenges.
Portland has a great location and it is only 25 minutes away from Hartford, 30 minutes from the shoreline and 2 hours from Boston and New York.
People who move to Portland have a tendency to stay. Homes are generally priced from $200,000 to $500,000 and you can get more house for your money than in some other surrounding areas. The town has many new developments and you can live in the country or closer to town. Many areas have spectacular views, because of all of the hills and there is also a large area of state forest.
Be sure you stop by and visit.
